Terry DeLapp
(1934-2020)

Terry Delapp was born in Pasadena, California, in 1934. While growing up in Pasadena, he attended Southwestern Military Academy in San Marino. During his teenage years, the DeLapp family moved to the artistic seaside community of Cambria, California. DeLapp attended high school in Cambria and then later at San Pedro High School in Southern California, where he graduated. After graduating high school, DeLapp attended Long Beach City College before enrolling in the liberal arts program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After attending UCLA, he studied at the Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts) in Los Angeles.

During the 1950s, art instruction at most American art institutions favored Abstract Expressionism over the more traditional styles such as Realism or Impressionism. It was the American masters that influenced DeLapp the most. In 1959 DeLapp became an art dealer as well as an artist. Owning and operating the Terry DeLapp Gallery in Los Angeles for over 30 years, he specialized and became an expert in 19th and 20th-century masters of the Hudson River School.

Over time DeLapp created his own personal and unique style that emphasizes his commitment to the environment and the beauty of landscape painting. Terry DeLapp describes his artwork as Neo-Tonalist, “Although I am primarily a landscape painter, my work is not Plein-air, my finished paintings are easel work, stylistically Neo-Tonalist. I work within a confine of classic composition and limited palette using the medium (acrylic), in the manner of oil paint; glazing, scumbling, building textures all in a traditional way”. In addition to DeLapp’s landscape paintings, he also paints still lifes of flowers and seascapes.
