Ferdinand Kaufmann was born in Oberhausen, Germany on Oct. 17, 1864. Kaufmann immigrated to Pittsburgh, PA as a teenager. He studied art in Paris with Laurens, Bouguereau, Constant, and Manet. He then spent six years painting in Europe before returning to the U.S. in 1902. While based in Pittsburgh, he painted in New England, Arizona, and California. Upon moving to Southern California in 1921, he bought a home in Pasadena and a studio home in Laguna Beach. Ferdinand Kaufmann was active in the local art world until his demise in Los Angeles on March 23, 1942. An Impressionist and master of color and composition, the influence of his Parisian teachers is evinced in his still lifes, landscapes, seascapes and figure studies.
