John Gamble
JOHN GAMBLE
(1863 - 1957)

"Wild Heliotrope and Poppies"
Oil on canvas
12" x 16"

A really nice example of John Gamble's work.  As the dirt road meanders
 up the hill we are
visually enticed by colorful poppy and heliotrope flowers surrounded by boulders and oaks in a
chaparral landscape.  As we look up the road towards the crest of the ridge we notice the beautiful
California sunshine coming into view across the higher mountains.

Duncan Gleason
JOE DUNCAN GLEASON
(1881 - 1959)

"Red Rock Canyon"
Oil on canvas.  Original artist's label with description verso.
16" x 20"

A brilliant light filled and well balanced composition highlight this extremely well done painting
of a man on horseback surrounded by the beauty of Red Rock Canyon.   The broken brush strokes
in the sky and the bright red color of the cliffs exhibit the grandeur of this California state park.
Red Rock Canyon's wonderful bright colored and eroded mountain forms surround both sides of
CA Highway 14 about 25 miles north of Mojave.

Paul Grimm
PAUL GRIMM
(1891 - 1974)

"South Palisades"
Oil on canvas
30" x 40"

Reminiscent of Paul Grimm's earlier works, this large painting of the South Fork in the Eastern
Sierra near Big Pine gives us a view of the beauty of spring in the High Sierra.  Tall trees, fore-
ground shading, and the darker muddy colors of the rocks contrast the view in the distance of
the cool blue lake, grass covered hillside and sunlit mountain peaks.  This painting is
complemented with a beautiful hand carved antique vintage frame.

"Eucalyptus, Griffith Park LA"
Oil on board.  Titled verso by Paul Grimm.
16" x 20"

In 1919 Paul Grimm moved to Hollywood and lived very close to Griffith Park and this location.
This painting with it's peaceful scenery and without the infrastructure that probably exists there
today, exhibits a different place in Los Angeles history.  Look carefully in the bright colored
foreground and you'll notice the nice little footpath leading off in the distance towards the hills.

"Foothills Ranch"
Oil on board
16" x 20"

Sam Hyde Harris is well recognized for his masterful technique of creating atmospheric effects.
"Foothills Ranch" is a very well executed example of his technique of using soft muted colors
and heavy paint layers to capture and display a level of  fog or haze in the air of his painting.

"Weathered"
Oil on board
18" x 24"

Broad confident brush strokes in the sky contrast the bright multiple colors of the roof and barn.
Barns tend to be often painted subjects, allowing a painter to express and capture the character of a
building in a different place in time and painted as through it were a portrait.  Illustrated page 191,
"SAM HYDE HARRIS 1889-1977 A Retrospective".

"Laguna Sunset 1920"
Oil on board
10.5" x 13.75"

Hinkle was an artistic innovator during his time and would become known as one of the "Group of Eight"
modernists during the late 1920's.  This painting, although small in size exhibits more to the eye as we
stand back from it and study it's detail.   Where the tide meets the sand we notice two birds and off in
the distance beyond the horizon the sunset against the cloud filled sky.
