A very colorful example with great composition. Using a technique of applying varying thicknesses of paint from the bottom of the painting to the top of the painting, Bartlett masterfully exhibits depth with splashes of thick impasto in the foreground that give way to areas of thinly painted clouds and sky in the distance.
CARL OSCAR BORG (1879 - 1947)
"California Coastal" Oil on canvas 20" x 30"
A bright and crisp coastal landscape. With only a few clouds in the sky, Carl Oscar Borg captures the bright afternoon sun as it reflects off the seaside cliffs. The dry sunlit sand and oceanside cliffs contrast in color with the darker colored wet rocks splashed by the ocean's tide. This painting is housed in a beautiful early Richard Tobey hand carved gold leaf frame.
ELIZABETH BORGLUM (1848-1922)
"Still Life with Grapes" Oil on canvas 24" x 18"
Elizabeth Borglum is one of California's early noted painters that was fortunate to study and paint abroad in France during the late nineteenth century. She exhibited in the Paris Salons during the 1890's. With great detail, Borglum captures the glistening light as it shines on the grapes painted in various shades of green and red reflecting their genuine appearance. This painting rests in a beautifully hand carved Richard Tobey gilt frame.
MAURICE BRAUN (1877 - 1941)
"The Hillside" Oil on board 12" x 16"
A classic Southern California Maurice Braun landscape. With his short and tight impressionist brushwork, Maurice Braun displays a bright colored and charming California hillside with tall grasses, shrubs and trees nestled against the rolling foothills. Housed in a new hand carved gold leaf frame that really complements the painting nicely.
BENJAMIN BROWN (1865 - 1942)
"Poppies and Eucalyptus" Oil on canvas 10" x 14"
Benjamin Brown treats us to this delightful view of the Southern California foothills with this marvelous landscape. A slopping hillside of poppies in the foreground leads our eye down to a well balanced and distant composition of eucalyptus trees and green rolling hills. Illustrated page 49, "Benjamin Chambers Brown 1865 - 1942 California Colors". Exhibited Pasadena Museum of California Art.
CONRAD BUFF
"Sierra Peaks" Oil on wood panel, 14" x 30"
Horizontal brushstrokes of contrasting color separate the basin floor from the High Sierra Mountains and then again with great contrasting color, the snowcapped peaks against a brilliant dark blue variant sky. Illustrated page 108, "The Art & Life of Conrad Buff".
CONRAD BUFF (1886 - 1975)
"Vase of Flowers" Oil on board 20" x 16"
A truly stunning Conrad Buff still life. The juxtaposition of color that makes up the background and the way the dapples of color contrast with the vase and flowers is really striking. Illustrated page 90, "The Art & Life of Conrad Buff".
FERDINAND BURGDORFF (1881 - 1975)
"Monterey and Carmel Bay" Oil on canvas, 16" x 30"
A remarkable Ferdinand Burgdorff painting in it's original period frame! Probably painted near the location of Pebble Beach Golf Course. This early Burgdorff displays beautiful color and an attractive impasto texture.
WILLIAM CLAPP (1879 - 1954)
"Bay Orchard" Oil on board 15" x 18"
French inspired and possibly painted during his best period after his return from France. From up on the hill we can see many rooftops an orchard and further down the road even more rooftops. Off in the distance the hills preface the bay with it's shimming water as it reflects light against the sky.
COLIN CAMPBELL COOPER (1856 - 1937)
"Mirror Lake, Yosemite" Oil on board 13.75" x 10.5"
We are extremely pleased to offer this rare Colin Campbell Cooper Yosemite painting. This painting was painted in the winter of 1916 when Colin Campbell Cooper made a painting trip to Yosemite after attending the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Acquired directly from the Estate of Herman H. Eddy who was the original owner of this painting and a personal friend of Colin Campbell Cooper. Herman H. Eddy was the son of William M. Eddy, a 49er and surveyor of the City of San Francisco and later founder of the County National Bank and Trust of Santa Barbara. Eddy Street in San Francisco is named after him.
LELAND CURTIS (1897 - 1989)
"San Juan Capistrano" Oil on canvas 20" x 24"
An outstanding Leland Curtis painting of one of California's most important historical landmarks. Notice how Curtis paints rays of sunshine on the adobe walls that exhibit it's patina of age. With great balance he also gives us the garden walkway with flowers and the deep blue sky that is Southern California. Housed in it's original and exceptional hand carved frame.
LELAND CURTIS (1897 - 1989)
"Lingering Snows" Long Lake in Sierra Nevada Oil on canvas, 20" x 24"
Leland Curtis was an avid mountaineer and skier (one of the founders of the Sierra Clubs, "Ski Mountaineers Section") as well as a great painter of the Antarctic. This painting captures Curtis great love of the Sierras and combines it with his ability to paint glacial ice. Interesting fine dapples of contrasting color and broken brushwork in the mountain peak add a dramatic impressionist quality to this painting.
FRANCIS DIXON (1879 - 1967)
"Carmel by the Sea" Oil on wood panel 9.25" x 13"
A really interesting family history of wealth and power (click on the photo to read his bio.) surrounded this painters family as he traveled from the east coast to live in California during 1915-1916. This painting is a rare find and is very well executed. Looks great in this new hand carved gold leaf frame.
PAUL DOUGHERTY (1877 - 1947)
"Late Afternoon" Oil on board 15" x 21.5"
A National Academy marine painter, Dougherty captures the sunlight and shadows of the late afternoon sun reflecting on the white washed waves and contrasting dark colored rocks. Original signature is located in the lower right.
PAUL DOUGHERTY (1877 - 1947)
"Moonlit Surf" Oil on board 12" x 16"
A very interesting nocturne marine painting. This painting has a unique play on light, darkness, and color. Cumulus clouds allow the moonlight to shine though and provide reflections of bouncing red and green colors against a nighttime sea while a bluish-white whitewash from the crashing waves splashes against the dark wet rocky shore.
ANGEL ESPOY (1879 - 1963)
"California Poppy Trail" Oil on board 14" x 18"
One of the best Espoy poppy painting compositions we can find anywhere. Painted with a heavier application of paint and more subdued colors than some of Espoy's later paintings.
ANGEL ESPOY (1879 - 1963)
"Two Boats" Oil on board 14" x 11"
Espoy's employment as a first mate in the Spanish Merchant Marines and his love of the sea led him to become an accomplished maritime painter. In this commendable small painting with great texture and cool blue color, Espoy captures nice detail and proportion in the two boats as they sail in the ocean. The unique and very well made hand carved gold leaf frame adds a nice touch to make this a sweet little package.
