Multicolored boats are poised to bring in their daily catch as the space between them dances with their reflections. Lighter blues scumbled over darker tones shows the interplay of light on the water flanking the ships. The dark waters in the foreground are composed of thick horizontal strokes of blue with hints of green. Flecks of reds and patches of warm beige break up the cool tones that dominate this composition.
DUNCAN GLEASON (1881 - 1959)
"Brigantine Porpoise" Oil on canvas 25" x 30"
Duncan Gleason portrays a spirit of adventure as uniformed sailors embark on a voyage with their flags waving proudly in the winds. It is a cheerful afternoon along the California coastline, with sunny skies and mild chop on the water. The wind filled sails reflect the color in the clouds, giving the two-masted vessel a weightless quality. Gleason uses a splendid palette of blues that balance well with muted browns in the ship and the distant coastline.
DUNCAN GLEASON (1881 - 1959)
"Red Rock Canyon" Oil on canvas. Original artist's label with description verso. 16" x 20"
A brilliant light filled and well balanced composition highlight this extremely well done painting of a man on horseback surrounded by the beauty of Red Rock Canyon. The broken brush strokes in the sky and the bright red color of the cliffs exhibit the grandeur of this California state park. Red Rock Canyon's wonderful bright colored and eroded mountain forms surround both sides of CA Highway 14 about 25 miles north of Mojave.
PERCY GRAY (1869 - 1952)
"Eucalyptus with a View of San Francisco Bay" Watercolor 16" x 20"
Gray’s watercolor gives us a great visual balance between airiness of mark and heaviness of color. Our view of the bay is framed by lush trees veiled in blue shadows. Diffused light filters through treetops and gives this scene a stunning glow. The application of color in soft, feathery washes and stains give the painting a dreamlike quality. Though the mood is calm and quiet, we get the sense of a subtle energy stirring amongst the trees.
PAUL GRIMM (1891 - 1974)
"Glacier Palisades, High Sierra" Oil on canvas 20" x 24"
Grimm paints an adventurous summertime view of this prominent Sierra Nevada glacier. Rugged mountain details are rendered with a textured application of paint giving us a great sense of dimension. Accents of warm brown in the foreground are a nice compliment to a bold use of violets and blues in the summits. We can feel both the warm sun and the coolness of glacial ice at the same time.
PAUL GRIMM (1891 - 1974)
"South Palisades" Oil on canvas 30" x 40"
Reminiscent of Paul Grimm's earlier works, this large painting of the South Fork in the Eastern Sierra near Big Pine gives us a view of the beauty of spring in the High Sierra. Tall trees, fore- ground shading, and the darker muddy colors of the rocks contrast the view in the distance of the cool blue lake, grass covered hillside and sunlit mountain peaks. This painting is complemented with a beautiful hand carved antique vintage frame.
PAUL GRIMM (1891 - 1974)
"Eucalyptus, Griffith Park LA" Oil on board. Titled verso by Paul Grimm. 16" x 20"
In 1919 Paul Grimm moved to Hollywood and lived very close to Griffith Park and this location. This painting with it's peaceful scenery and without the infrastructure that probably exists there today, exhibits a different place in Los Angeles history. Look carefully in the bright colored foreground and you'll notice the nice little footpath leading off in the distance towards the hills.
SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889 - 1977)
'By Gone Days" Oil on board 17 7/8" x 23 7/8"
Thick brushwork gives this painting a velvety quality and brings the composition to life. Harris paints a relaxing view of tree groves nestled against a mountain base. The valley is bathed in warm sunlight giving it a comforting radiance. Lavender shadows in the mountain face show its craggy form, while rosy hues make the illuminated peaks shimmer. Burgundy reds and earthy oranges contrast stunningly next to warm greens. There is a nice sense of depth as our eye meanders back through the painting up to the distant mountains and sky.
SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889 - 1977)
"Yesterday" Oil on board 12" x 16"
A dirt path leads us through low brush towards a creek winding through the canyon. Lemony yellow blossoms and tufts of orange accent the desert floor. A line of trees dense with foliage gently curves and draws our eye towards distant mountains that are veiled in the haze of an overcast day. Thickly applied paint strokes in a color palette of earth tones harmonize with shades of violet.

SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889 - 1977)
"Weathered" Oil on board 18" x 24"
Broad confident brush strokes in the sky contrast the bright multiple colors of the roof and barn. Barns tend to be often painted subjects, allowing a painter to express and capture the character of a building in a different place in time and painted as through it were a portrait. Illustrated page 191, "SAM HYDE HARRIS 1889-1977 A Retrospective".

Anna Hills captures a glowing haven of life found amidst a rugged landscape that is marvelously saturated with thickly applied color. Luminous greens swoop down from the flourishing tree and connect our eye with the low-lying vegetation. Hues of blue lighten as the mountain peaks retreat into a pale blue sky.

This painting is an enchanting capture of a vista that was exclusive to Clarence Hinkle. An outstretched tree limb and a lively garden frame a lovely view of calm harbor waters. The watercolor is painted in a cheerful palette with a prominent use of blue. Black illustrative line work distinguishes forms amongst the washes of color. The use of brighter colors in the foreground garden contrasts from the subdued gray blues of the town, perhaps hinting at the artist’s appreciation of being removed from city living.
CLARENCE HINKLE (1880 - 1960)
"Up to La Cumbre" Watercolor 14" x 21"
Our view is of a picturesque mountainside community with houses perched on hillsides. A blue-gray La Cumbre is accented with vibrant yellow, rich greens and little splashes of red. The soft blue sky crowns a rugged summit which stands imposingly above the town. Broad washes flecked with shorter strokes give this watercolor a joyful energy. There is a lovely incorporation of texture and color, as the paper grain reveals itself underneath paint strokes applied with a slightly dryer brush.
CLARENCE HINKLE (1880 - 1960)

THOMAS HUNT (1882 - 1938)
"In The Harbor" Oil on paper 8" x 10"
The focal point of this painting is a small boat operated by a solitary fisherman. A vibrant yellow mast rises out of the reddish brown vessel and contrasts nicely against invigorating blues. The water appears choppy with bright reflections as light beams down from a cheerful sky. Short playful strokes of broken color bring a great sense of movement and rhythm to this painting. Hunt displays a heavy use of blues and browns, while incorporating the canvas painting support as a color in the composition. The painting is reminiscent of those days on the water when the sun is so bright it blurs distant details in a dream-like haze.
